about

Neil:
"Trying to capture the unexpected and intense rollercoaster of fear, anxiety, tedium, despair, acceptance etc that we all experienced during this crisis was helpful to me in processing these experiences for myself. David’s music itself seems to echo that shared emotional roller-coaster in all its multifaceted glory but also frames the pieces beautifully while capturing the mood and tone of the time in a way that adds layers to and deepens the meaning and experience of the words. The poems themselves contain melancholy, humour, defiance, absurdity and whatever else you're having yourself and the music really gives these elements space to breathe."

David:
"Words spoken in times of crisis more often carry with them a meaning of a greater depth, a potency and profundity that perhaps in other times is not as immediate or felt as strongly - following the death of a loved one; a bad turn of events; a tragic accident. During war-time words, messages and letters sent covertly and dangerously from behind enemy lines were in themselves wrapped with a further sense of the dire situation.
The conception, birth and delivery of this project all occurred very swiftly - just like the pandemic that emerged from seemingly nowhere and left us all bewildered and in a state of shock. Each day bringing with it new challenges. Neil's poetry created during this phase perfectly captured the sense of anxiety, confusion, sadness and of course humour that struck the globe. It also reflected human being's boundless ability to adapt to any situation, no matter how unprecedented to allow creativity to find a way and to harness that ability and strength in conveying messages swirling between the head, heart and soul. An infinite hope.
The aim of my contribution was to adorn the words rather than get in the way of them. To accompany these messages shared from a distance across digital waveforms, which, in a quick snapshot, strongly conveyed and communicated the isolation and reflection felt by all. The medium itself became a message.
Secondly to this, the hope was to strike at the composition and sound sculpting in a manner that reflected the sense of restriction and limitation experienced as we went about our daily lives: using only a limited number of audio tracks; beginning and completing pieces in a 2-hour window late at night; not labouring over anything and finishing one piece before moving onto the next; all in a limited time period.
Feeling out each step one at a time musically mirrored each unknown step taken to the outside world beyond the safe bounds of our homes. Not only did this allow us to capture a point in time, striking while the iron was still hot, it also demonstrated that even in the strictest of situations, art and creativity can flourish. While we have the ability - and nowadays the technology - to collaborate and communicate, we will continue such endeavours no matter what is thrown in our path."
